If you have read our previous posts “Why Fundraising is Critical for Power Wheelchair Soccer Teams”, “What it Takes to be a Wheelchair Soccer Player”, and “Why is Power Wheelchair Soccer So Important”, you now understand why you often see so many fundraising campaigns for Power Wheelchair Soccer teams and players. Let’s face it, none of us want to constantly be bombarded with requests for money from everyone under the sun. We are so inundated at times with GoFundMe requests for money for medical expenses, help with bills, or for personal items that we often overlook these requests at a certain point. It is in our nature to want to avoid the inbox being flooded with requests, or to scan straight over all the social media campaigns that flood our news feed. However, I would challenge you to look a little further before just writing off some of these campaigns.
The Hot Shots Power Soccer Team runs solely on donations and fundraising. Without the support of our family, friends, and community, we would no longer be able to operate. We would be required to turn away all the young children who have dreamed about being an athlete their entire lives, but told they would never be able to accomplish that feat. These children would be forced back to the sidelines to watch their able-bodied siblings, or favorite able-bodied teams play the sports they love and long to play. They would once again be told they “can’t”. We want to tell our young players that they CAN. They can be an athlete, they can grow in their skills and their love for the game. They can belong to a competitive team that will help teach them the skills they need to be a great athlete when they grow up.
By being involved in adaptive sports such as Power Wheelchair Soccer, these children who may have had no other social outlet now have a team of people who understand and accept them for who they are. They have adult teammates that become mentors for them both on and off the court. They can learn skills from them, but also discuss fears or stresses that come along with living with a severe disability with someone who understands. They finally have a place where they feel they belong, and an outlet that allows them to improve their skills and showcase their talents, not their disability. These sports are essential for the mental and physical well being of many children, but without the support of our donors, we would not be able to provide them with these opportunities.
Our children athletes aren’t the only ones who benefit from the outlet of Power Wheelchair Soccer. Many of our adult athletes are unable to work full time due to their disabilities, and are often left alone for the majority of their days. Power Wheelchair Soccer helps to provide an outlet for our adult athletes as well. It provides comradery with people who understand their daily struggles. It provides them friendships with whom they can feel free from judgement, but also provides motivation to improve skills and help each other increase their playing abilities. Having adults on the team helps to push the younger players to improve their skills as well, in a healthy, motivational atmosphere. It helps provide encouragement for the younger players that they can grow up to be happy, successful, and have friends,
Not only do team members form bonds that can last a lifetime, members of other teams can also become friends, as well as competitors. This sport fosters a sense of unity amongst all its players, regardless of the team for which they play. Not only do team members have the opportunity to make friends close to home, they can become friends with players from all over the country. While we may compete against each other, we also cheer for each other and celebrate other’s accomplishments. This is a phenomenon that you can witness throughout the adaptive sports world. It fosters a sense of sportsmanship, as well as a sense of togetherness. We celebrate together between matches, and we celebrate each other’s accomplishments even within games. We cheer for each other because we all understand that we are in this together. We want to continue to grow the United States Power Soccer Association (USPSA), and we hope to meet new friends each year.
It is because of all these reasons that we implore you to help in any way that you can by donating to the Hot Shots Power Soccer Team GoFundMe Campaign. Without sufficient funding our team members will miss out on all of the comradery, support, mentorship, and ability to showcase their talents. They will once again be forced to watch from the sidelines as their life passes them by. They will miss out on all the opportunities that this sport can provide. Please, if you can assist us in our cause, your donation will be greatly appreciated. We are a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit organization, so all donations are tax deductible, and you will receive a tax deductible receipt from your donation.
